CHAPTER 9

After a full day of hiking in the Blue Hills, Marissa and Jonah were back in the basement bedroom—her head on Jonah’s chest.

“Today was fun,” she purred.

“Every day with you is fun,” he said.

She sighed. “I love when we can spend the whole day together,” she said, “especially when it doesn’t cost all kinds of money that we don’t have.”

“Which is why we do things that don’t cost money,” he teased.

She slapped his belly. “We always seem to end up back here, though, don’t we?”

“I hope that’s not a problem?” he said.

“Oh, I’m not complaining. I’m just pointing out the obvious.”

“Honestly, Marissa,” he said, positioning himself so he could look into her eyes, “it’s because there’s no other place in the world I’d rather be than in bed with you,” he vowed. This was not intended in a nasty way, and she somehow understood that. “It’s not just about the sex. It really isn’t.” He wished he had the right words to explain. “I feel closest to you when we’re being physical together.”

She kissed him. “Good answer.”

“I love you,” he said, “and that’ll never change, no matter where we are.”

“I love you more,” she purred.

They lay quietly for a while, content to be in each other’s company while awaiting another surge of energy.

“Do you think we have a chance at making it,” she asked, “being high school sweethearts, and all?”

“Of course, we do,” he said, “my parents did.” He cringed. “Although it might be nice if we did more than just tolerate each other.”

She giggled. “I wouldn’t mind fighting with you for the rest of my life.”

“What?”

“It would still mean that we’re together, right?”

“Wow, I like that,” he said, “although I’d rather live in peace, if we can.”

They both laughed.

“I love you so much,” she said.

“Ditto, beautiful,” he told her, “and we can stop being physical with each other for a while, if you’re wondering how much I really—”

“Are you crazy?” she said. “Why would you suggest something so awful?”

He laughed for a moment, and then kissed her passionately. The time for talk was over.

Marissa had just tiptoed out of the house when Jonah thought, I really do love this girl. I wonder if she really is the one.

The following morning, Jonah headed upstairs, surprised to find his father sitting in his recliner, reading a book. “No work today?” he asked.

His dad shook his head. “I can only take so much at one time. I’m playing hooky.” He looked up from his book and smirked. “You know what that is, right?”

Jonah was smart enough not to answer that one.

“Marissa left late last night,” his father commented.

Jonah nodded.

“I could hear you two from here. I hope you’re using protection?”

“We are,” Jonah said, comfortable talking to his father about such things. “I think she’s the one, Dad.”

Placing the book into his lap, his dad smiled. “Jonah, let me give you the same advice my father gave me about finding the right woman when I was your age. Make a list of the top five things that you absolutely need in a mate.
